Opera in concert version
In 1890, the resounding success at the Teatro Costanzi, in Rome, of Cavalleria Rusticana brought to composer Pietro Mascagni a notoriety never equaled in his later operas. “I shouldn´t have written Cavalleria first”, the composer often complained. Inspired on a play by Giovanni Verga, a cornerstone of verismo, the opera gathers its dramatic strength in jealousy and treason. The voices of Turiddu and Alfio join Santuzza’s, this one divided between her religious faith and the indignity of an impossible love. A love triangle of tragic consequences which unfolds under the Mediterranean blazing sun in a poor Sicilian village.
